It would seem wheelie bins would serve only one purpose...as a place to put your refuse for the garbage collector to pick up and take away. Normally, one doesn’t think of a wheelie bin as anything other than a utilitarian device that serves its purpose well – and conveniently – but lacks any “pizzazz,” and certainly isn’t particularly visually appealing. It is fair to say, historically, that’s how they’ve always been. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and there’s certainly no reason not to add visual appeal to these useful containers.

History of Wheelie Bins - From Prehistoric Times to Today

Waste bins began as heavy, round and metal containers with two handles on the side and the top (to get a firm hold) and a lid to cover them. Basically, they were made up of a long sheet of metal welded along the smallest edge of the waste bin. The bottom was also a circular metal bottom. When collected by dustmen, these were usually picked by their handles and hoisted on their shoulders. It seems they never had much regard for hygiene back then.
