Shop NowTop 5 Tips to Keep Your Smelly Bin Smelling Fresh
Is your smelly bin the bane of your life? Bins aren’t the most hygienic of things at the best of times, but having them smell like death is not inevitable. Here are the top 5 ways to keep your bin smelling fresh.
Be mindful of what you put in it
Recycle as much as you can, and whatever you can’t recycle, make sure you give it a rinse. Food debris and residue make for a smelly bin. Food waste is a common culprit when it comes to nasty bin odours too. Look for ways to reduce your food waste or start adding it to a compost heap.
Regular sanitising prevents a smelly bin
Don’t wait until your bin stinks to high heaven before you clean it. Give the sides and the lid a spritz with some antibacterial cleaning spray regularly and see what a difference it makes.
Deep clean your bin often
Once per month, or even better, once per fortnight, give your bin a good deep clean. Use a pressure washer or hose to get rid of debris that’s lodged in the bottom. The next step is to give it a good clean with your product of choice. Bleach diluted in hot water is a good option. However, if you want a more natural solution, make your own cleaning spray from vinegar, hot water, and lemon juice. Give your smelly bin a good swill, then empty the water down the drain. Allow your bin to air dry.
Prevent a smelly bin with liners
The gunk and debris that ends up in the deepest darkest corners of your wheelie bin can cause nasty smells. Prevention is better than cure, so soak up leakages and capture debris by lining the bottom of your bin. You can use a bin bag and some absorbent kitchen roll. Or you can invest in some scented liners if you want to get fancy.
Get rid of any lingering odours
Sometimes, no matter how much you clean your bin, it doesn’t quite smell fresh. If after all your effort, you still have a smelly bin, you can sprinkle some baking soda inside to absorb odours. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil and your bin will be smelling like roses once again.
